Switzerland and the Cheese Monster! :)
Switzerland is always one of my favourite places to visit. It is an added bonus to be able to (finally) spend some time with Jason, Louise and their little boy, Garion. They are also expecting another bubs in a couple of months, so it was perfect timing for a visit.
Whenever I reminiss about Switzerland there are always a few things that immediately come to mid... my friends, beautiful countryside and CHEESE. Yep, ever the 'cheese monster', I dream of the cheese in Switzerland. So on our first day out we headed to a beautiful little town called Appenzell. After a bit of a wander around we headed to the most important part of town... the Cheese shop. After numerous samplings we discovered one that only slightly smelt like my hiking boots and yet tasted devine. Not that I am admitting to tasting my boots! (*grin*). So with a purchase made, the sightseeing done, we headed home for some more food. Can you hear Ray cheering at that thought?! (*wink*)
The next couple of days also consisted of eating in numerous little towns. One cute little town called Gottleiben had a restaurant on the river where we ate fish and chips. I thought this worked out well as now Ray has something to compare the experience to in the UK.
Next stop was Stein am Rheim, which is pretty medieval town with a huge wall around it. We seem to have a habit of arriving in towns just when the shops are closing. This was not the best timing, as we had all decided that we wanted to have fondue for dinner. Wonderful Louise (knowing that we would all spend the evening sulking if we missed out) managed to convince a shop to let her in, tiptoed over the wet floor and bought some fondue cheese. We were all suitably impressed with her efforts! Ray and I then headed off for a bit more of a wander around town, but managed to lose Jase and Lou. As we were looking for them I noticed a chocolate shop. Who would we find inside? Yup, Jase and Lou! So we added chocolate to the dinner purchases. It's no wonder that we are quickly putting on the weight!
We spent our final day in Switzerland in another medieval town, Rapperswil. We started with a relaxing ferry trip there so that we could get a different perspective (and just cos we love boats!). One thing that we have noticed is that there are church steeples every 100 metres here. Guess they have a lot to confess or something. Anyway, Rapperswil is a big and beautiful townand we spent hours wandering the streets, climbing up the hills and looking at gardens. One of the best discoveries was a local museum that had a lot of well preserved artifacts, but where it was all laid out in rooms decorated to the same era. Very interesting.
Switzerland was done at quite a nice pace after the chaos of Singapore, but we have definitely been looking forward to Italy. More on that shortly!
